Almost all of us end up looking for the meaning of life at some point. And ALL of us look for the meaning of just about everything else on a day to day basis. What does a person's car mean about their bank account? What does a person's behavior mean about their values? What does the way I'm treated mean about me? What only some of us learn is that meaning is more an art than a science. You do not simply calculate it - you have the power to construct it as you see fit and you should absolutely be using this power. A setback can mean you are destined to lose or it can mean you are one step further in the process of winning. Others accomplishing things you have yet to yourself can mean they're better than you or it can mean you need more time to reach your peak because yours is higher than theirs. Neither is wrong, you literally get to choose. And if you let others choose for you, you're bound to make some wrong choices. Be aware of how you choose to interpret the things around you and you will see just how much influence you truly have over your reality.

“Know what I know, but don’t know how to fix it.” Most are familiar with this sentiment for some reason or other, be it problems with health, issues at work, or something as small as a less than satisfactory meal. For Jizza Raw, what he knows is that he is depressed and solutions seem evasive. Nevertheless, he pursues one and, in the form of his debut album Reasons to Live, he has created one. It is more accurate to call it a treatment than a cure - depression doesn’t give up that easily - but by expressing himself in ways that he can (and should) be proud of Jizza weakens his enemy and strengthens himself.

The victory extends to his fans, too. Relatable lines serve to validate their thoughts and emotions. “I’m feeling cold cause she indifferent” is not something men are taught to express, for fear of being considered over-sensitive or unmanly, but it is also something that needs to be communicated so that it can be addressed. Luckily, fans have the option of expressing themselves vicariously through the track “Know What I Know.” And they have the comfort of knowing they’re not the only ones who feel as they do. In this way, he gives others permission to express themselves as he has.

As the first song on the album, “Know What I Know” sets the tone with a combination of speedily delivered rap lines and impassioned harmonies that create a sense of intrigue with their contrast and uniqueness. The introductory track balances social commentary, longing, venting, and braggadocio in its lyrical content, much like the rest of the album, and thus takes the listener through a wide range of emotions. For instance, “thinking on my ending, hoping it’s poetic” elicits a very different emotional response than “why would you think you can stop me!” One line may give you the blues while the other might boost your confidence. Furthermore, vocals from Will With The Beads (who produced the track) give the song an extra bit of tenderness and soul as he laments “how would I know?” in unison with Jizza. Listeners are left with a sense of empathy and inspiration that carries over into the next track.

“Know What I Know” transitions into an eerie melody paired with a grounding 808 as “Rainbow” begins. In this track about getting through the rain to enjoy the rainbow, Jizza delves into depression more aggressively from the very first line, “not so okay but there’s always tomorrow.” Listeners are invited to trudge through the rain with him rather than by themselves, as he is “right there with [them, he’s] been crying a stressing,” too. They, just like him, have made it through every test so far, since they are still alive, and, just like him, they can continue to. This energy is continued in the second verse, performed by Timi Turnup, as he declares that he “aint dead yet, and that’s enough reason for [him].” If today can be survived, maybe tomorrow can too.

The production takes a turn in a calmer direction on “Komorebi,” while maintaining the message from “Rainbow”. The title comes from the japanese word for the sunlight shining through the leaves of a tree, which, like a rainbow, represents the light beyond darkness. Rather than the eerie feel of the previous song, this track uses soft guitar strumming to help fans into Jizza’s dejected headspace.

Subsequently, astral sounds throughout “LUV” bring back the ghostly vibes from “Rainbow,” this time much less ominous, while lyrics full of reflection conversationally explain the importance of self-love, reminding listeners that “just cause you’re lost, don’t make you a lost cause” and “losing affection don’t mean you aint in the right direction or learning lessons.” A gentle tone is used - one that feels like a friend or a guardian - making sure that fans are receptive to his words of encouragement. It is easy to tell that these thoughts truly means something to him and that he wants them to mean something to anyone who needs them.

The chill mood of “LUV” is no less present in “Badu.” Reason’s fifth track is get-you-through music, full of mellow melodies inspired by Mary Jane and Erykah Badu. Ironically enough, the next track is an interlude titled “Drug Free.” Soothing vocals relax the beat, passing his temporary freedom from stress along to his listeners and, for the first easily noticeable time in the album, the future isn’t just hopeful, it’s exciting! Even with the song’s wishful nature, a sense of satisfaction permeates this tune and attempts to permeate the audience as well.

Aggressiveness makes a forceful return with “Beads,” a bold declaration of power rooted in the beaded necklaces around his neck and the artistic community that they represent. He rejects prescriptive solutions to his woes, as he believes the “doc’s tryna keep a young genius stupid.” “If they say the [drugs] work, they’re going [to] have to prove it” because the side effects are not to be taken likely, so much so that they can practically zombify an person. Timi Turnup makes a second appearance, bringing fierce bravado as he announces that he has “made [his] reality yield to his dreams.” It is an oath of victory, swearing upon the trials each artist has overcome that they will overcome the trials ahead. They will use all of their power and all of the power in the beads to transcend their stressors, but, going even beyond that, they will lead their fans in doing the same. The necklace around the neck, “like a crown,” signifies an independent leader with the strength to bolster his or her followers.

This transition into confidence marks the beginning of the “reefer preacher’s” sermon. Rather than simply venting or offering up somebody to relate to, “Mirror” instructs. He prays his people stop “overthinking, feeding [themselves] doubt, replaying scenarios, seeing the goodness in everybody but hating [themselves]” and much more. We can tell from his tone, however, that he does not simply pray for these things, he demands them.

The doctrine delivery persists on “Knowledge,” starting with him asking how many times he must remind people before they no longer have “the same old message to learn” and pondering whether they are “blind or ignoring.” One Take Dave steps in to speak to the congregation in verse two and commands that listeners “stop telling [him] what [they] heard” because “this is no time to be cattle” and mandating acknowledgement that “the powerful aint got power,” just the illusion of it. He questions the current leadership’s decisions, such as “50 plus missile deployed, bombed in Syria but telling [him] that [they] aint got no money” for young and resourceless kids. The instrumental fades out towards the end of One Take’s verse, allowing for a moment of reflection, and then the chorus returns to carry us into the perspectivist “Sand to the Sun.”

Control over perspective provides a lot of power and, by teaching it, Jizza endeavors to “ignite a fire in mortals and make them into a god.” Humility and confidence are both necessary, as has been showcased in his previous musings. “You’re the same as sand to the sun, meaning you’re meaningless,” but, nonetheless, “god made a god, [Jizza’s] the goat (greatest of all time)” too, just as you are if you choose the correct perspective to look at yourself. Moose Playground elaborates that “your head’s the same as your hand to a gun, it’s really all perspective.” As such, it should be treated as carefully as a firearm.

Next, regal guitar chords supply cohesiveness and hold attention during “King” as Jizza Raw combats the negative discourses he knows many of his listeners must confront. With this track, he closes out his reefer preacher sermon, morphing from leader back into companion. The instruction slows and catharsis returns with “Pressure.”

A phase effect on the vocals synergizes with the guitar, giving the song a Yeezus-esque sense of distortion that sounds almost like he is drowning in his own beat. The message mirrors the sound; Jizza bemoans the ever-growing list of pressures that threaten not to allow him to stay afloat. As he “starts to feel nothing, subconsciously,” he is forced to admit that he needs a break.

After he’s had his break, however, he must return to face his challenges with determination. In contrast to the fear of failure in the previous track, “Only One” is brimming with faith in self. Although “only one can win,” Jizza is sure “you know it’s gotta be [him.]” So obvious is his victory that it “really was never a question, [he] just assumed you agreed.” His final track uses jubilant wind instruments to bring the vibes to a crescendo, ending on a positive note to showcase what lies at the end of trusting the process.

Valuable advice and camaraderie consistently appear throughout the project, explicitly and implicitly, establishing his career’s mission statement with fluid poise and dogged conviction. Music is overtly beyond fun and games for this artist - it is a tool in his quest for enlightenment; a vehicle in which to flee from suffering; a resource with which to support his community. It is a great debut, indisputably remarkable, but, of course, the best way to confirm that conclusion is to kick back and listen for yourself. Click the image below to check it out!

Sometimes, food for thought aint enough!

Before I begin I must warn you, none of these recipes use exact measurements. I learned how to cook through trial and error whenever I was home alone because I couldn't go get missing ingredients for recipes so I figured I couldn't use them. Don't worry though! This style of cooking allows for extreme variations in quantity, which means that you can't really have too much or too little of anything! Without further ado, here is the recipe for Rice and Lemon-Pepper Tilapia.

Ingredients:

Tilapia filets (3-6)

4 zucchini (or yellow squash)

2 bell peppers (Red or orange)

8 oz mushrooms

Spinach

2 tablespoons of butter (or cannabutter)

Hella lemon pepper

Red-pepper flakes (optional)

Garlic

Instructions:

1. Fill medium pot 2/3 full with water. Add salt and bring to rolling boil on high heat.

2. After rinsing, dice zucchini (or squash) and chop red pepper and mushrooms as water comes to a boil.

3. Add a small amount of olive oil to medium pan. Heat on medium-high for 1.5 minutes and then add the zucchini, pepper, and mushrooms. Salt and stir periodically.

4. Add rice to water and reduce heat to simmer. Leave about a 1-2.5 inches of water above the rice. Continue to next step while allowing rice to cook for 7 minutes. (After 7 minutes, you will add spinach to the rice and cook it for an additional 5 minutes.)

5. On medium high heat, add butter (or cannabutter) and a small amount of water to large pan. Add garlic, salt, lemon pepper, onion flakes, and red pepper flakes, then stir.

6. Once the butter has melted, add tilapia filets to the large pan. Leave on medium high heat and flip after 5-7 minutes. The fish will be cooked after 5-7 minutes on each side.

7. Check on rice. Add spinach if it has been 7 minutes since adding the rice to the water.

8. Geeb.

9. Once rice and fish are finished, turn off all burners. Serve the vegetables and fish with butter sauce over the rice and spinach.

10. Enjoy!

Pairs well with moscato and cannabis.

“Pressure” is a recent hip-hop music video from Jizza Raw and, as the name suggests, tackles the topic of everyday pressures people face as they navigate life. Students struggle with paying back crushing loans, artists struggle earning a living, black men struggle with a number of issues in the US, and Jizza Raw struggles with all of these things and more. Many people do. With this song, Jizza stretches out a hand of companionship to such people; everyone who shares his struggles as well as those with issues all their own comprise his target audience. He channels detachment, desperation, anger, and isolation to fully convey the overall state of mind that various stressors have birthed without going into great detail about specific experiences. These sadly familiar emotions resonate with an engaged listener; albeit, each time in a way unique to the individual listening.

The song is delivered with distorted vocals seemingly inspired by Kid Cudi and the vibe from Kanye West’s album Yeezus. It’s deep, almost scratchy sounding melody has an unusual upbeat hopelessness to it and is composed of honest, introspective lyrics that at times sound conversational in how they defend his pain against those who do not understand it. For instance, the line “ask for love and you tax on it, no one else got a sack on it” uses a drug metaphor to divulge his feelings. In this context, to “tax” means to charge more than a fair and reasonable price and the line is intended to invoke the anxiety of having no choice but to pay an unreasonable price to be loved or go unloved. Furthermore, the metaphor skillfully reveals that his desire for drugs, specifically marijuana, is in part rooted in his need for an escape that love could just as easily provide. Choosing the word “you” creates a relatable tone so each person who hears the song can express their needs to whoever they wish - their own personal “yous” - vicariously through Jizza Raw. Beneath the lyrics one finds a distant, dark, and astral ambiance with an 808, drums and kicks woven into it, matching the vocals’ upbeat hopelessness. The visual that accompanies this is dark, both in subject matter and color. Blood red, chilling blues, and shades of black and white are the only colors found in abundance. Light is used sparingly in most scenes and the imagery cycles through several visual representations of pressure. We see a red balloon with a needle approaching to pop it. An egg being squeezed until it cracks. And, as the intensity of the pressure grows throughout the video, we come to see scenes of suicide. The battle between Jizza Raw and his inner self manifests quite literally as we see two of him, with the second strangling the weaker first self. Unfortunately, this struggle seems to end on a somber note as we see the result of pressure beyond a person’s breaking point. As the gun trembles against his temple, the balloon pops and the scene cuts to black. Jizza leaves us with a final message, written in white on the black background. “I need a reason to live.”

In this we see that Jizza Raw has the potential to play a very crucial role in the rap game - he can create captivating and energetic music without losing substance in the process. Pressure is buoyant enough to crank at your next function and nonetheless tackles a very under-explored issue, mental health, in depth. That means the track can offer strength, joy, and companionship whether his fans (or soon-to-be) are feeling up or feeling down. It can offer strength to the casual rap fan with its mainstream appeal and it can send a chill through the most well-versed hip hop head with its underground creativity. This is the kind of talent that artists like Kendrick Lamar and Drake exhibit, transcending the debates that pit mumble rap against lyricism and simply being accepted as good music. I don't want to be out of your mind. I want to be the reason your party is lit or the reason you have a positive outlook or the reason you stop pretending to be someone you're not. That's why I started Steezy Saturdays; to make sure that every week you get a reminder of how hard I work and what I can and will be with your support.

For those who don't know, Steezy Saturdays is a series of songs with one being released every Saturday. There are 52 weeks in a year so this being the 26th #SteezySaturday means that we're halfway to our first anniversary. If you start with Blue Lungs, you can hear not just the progression in my song structure and versatility but also in my abilities as an engineer. I'm passionate about my art and it is very dope to be able to hear my trajectory. I'm happy to say I have no plans of slowing down. Every single time you guys show a song to a friend brings me closer to my next level up, so you can now show off your support and good taste with the new Steezy Saturdays Tee in your favorite color from Steez Boutique.
As you know, the Boys with the Beads are always up to something! Jizza Raw, Will With The Beads, and Lindsay Vann linked up on "Candles Lit," a smooth and astral-but-organic track released just over two weeks ago (July 27th). Before anything else, I'll give the song a chance to speak for itself.

Jizza Raw shows tremendous flexibility in his flow and then Will brings the same soul and sweetness that he's consistently delivered. Not to be outshined, Lindsay comes in with distinct vocals and gives the track a necessary female touch. She sits in a pocket between rapping and singing that blends Jizza and Will's energies without blending in herself. If you're interested in more, check out each of their pages below! Don't forget to keep an eye out for Will's upcoming Friend or Foe Vol. 2 project, as well!

Strange Funk

In other recent Beaded excellence, Moose Playground, a term Ben uses to credit all those involved in his creative process, released the Beads very first non-Hip Hop/R&B project "Strange Funk." It's title track is a groovy single, but don't let that trick you into thinking it lacks a message. Dive into this Strange Funk, featuring Jizza Raw, and it might just save you from the TV screen.

Welcome to Creative of the Week, where an up-and-coming creative is highlighted for an outstanding piece (or pieces) of work. Our first Creative of the Week is Max Liberty. His latest release "Bulia" is pure energy and the vibe is an authentic one for sure. You can feel the drive and the youth as he tells you he "just wanna be the best" and the track makes it hard not to root for him. The sound builds off of what we got from him on his track "Outie" but he manages to infuse his newest with even more passion. Check out both tracks below.

Q & A with Max Liberty

Where are you from?

Selinsgrove, Pa

How long have you been making music?

I've honestly been making my own music for like 7 months. Before that I was just making beats along with my boy Hendo. He would use the DAW and I would just give suggestions and we'd work together on a lot of projects like that. Check him out by the way, he's got a joint album with Jizza Raw coming soon.

What kind of support do you receive? What kind do you wish you received?

I can't complain about my support for the level that I'm at. I understand that support for artists is like a snowball effect so as long as I keep making good music and experimenting, it will come. You just have to be patient and believe in yourself

What is the point of music in your opinion?

Music is a way to express yourself in my opinion. Words can be confusing when you're speaking to someone, but when you show them a song or play them a beat they can feel the emotion for what it is

What's the coolest/most interesting musical experience you've had?

I have my first few shows coming up with the homie Nicky G. We're performing at a festival in September. It's gunna be dope to be the one on stage being watched, not the other way around.

If your music was an animal, what animal would it be?

My music would be a Falcon because that's what I will be when I'm reincarnated

Why should people listen to your music?

This is a good question. People should listen to my music because it all has something to do with my life and I know that in every song I make, there's something that everyone can relate to

Are you pursuing any other creative avenues?

I'm trying to get my hands into everything I want to do. My initial platform is music but from there I want to get into photography/videography, video editing, and who knows what else. That's gunna be in the future though. As of now I'm just working hard on my music but once I master this I know I can do anything.

You can see in this interview that Max Liberty is a very grounded and passionate artist. Keep an eye out for his upcoming shows with Nicky G and remember, he's only going to get better.
Sometimes, food for thought aint enough!

Before I begin I must warn you, none of these recipes have measurements. I learned how to cook through trial and error whenever I was home alone because I couldn't go get missing ingredients for recipes so I figured I couldn't use them. Don't worry though! This style of cooking allows for extreme variations in quantity, which means that you can't really have too much or too little of anything! Without further ado, here is the recipe for Turnup's Special Rice!

Ingredients:

Hella rice

Yellow bell peppers

Orange bell peppers

Red bell peppers

Onions (White - not red)

Spinach

Mushrooms (optional)

Olive Oil or Cannabutter

Chicken breasts or tenders or boneless thighs

Cajun seasoning

Lemon or lemon juice or lemon pepper

Garlic

Salt

Red pepper flakes

(Utensils)

Big-ass pot

Big-ass pan

Sharp knife (for cutting chicken and vegetables)

Cutting board

Wooden spoon (or anything really)

Instructions:

1. Fill big-ass pot about 3/4 full of water. Bring water to rolling boil.

2. As the water comes to a boil, cut the peppers, onions, and mushrooms (optional) into medium sized pieces.

3. Cut chicken into shmedium sized pieces.

4. Heat olive oil or cannabutter briefly in big-ass pan over medium heat. If you see oil burning off (looks like steam or smoke is coming out) then it is too hot!

5. Dump your vegetation in the pan and let it sizzle for bout 5 minutes.

6. As the vegetables sizzle, add rice to boiling water. Leave about 2-3 inches of water above your rice. Reduce heat to medium.

7. Add chicken to the vegetables and heat for five minutes. Then add red pepper flakes (optional), Cajun seasoning (a lot), garlic (4 or 5 shakes), and lemon (a lil bit). Remember to keep an eye on your rice!

8. Raise from medium to medium-high heat. Sautee the chicken and vegetables on medium high heat for another 12-15 minutes (smaller portions don't need this much time I just be scared so I do it anyway).

9. Turn off heat. Your rice should be ready now. If it is not finished, give it some more time.

10. Geeb.

11. Taste test your chicken and broth before you pour it over your rice! If it is over-seasoned, use only a little sauce. If it is under-seasoned, simply add a bit of salt to flavor. Depending on how much sauce you use, you can prepare a plate packed full of flavor or a dish that's very subtle. Enjoy!

Pairs well with white wines and cannabis.
